As a Canadian-Irish human I wasn’t exposed to a whole lot of hip hop when I was growing up. I had to find my own, and have over my short lifetime developed a good (and bad) taste in the genre. In 2001 I saw the movie, in which I can only categorize as a B-musical, Carmen: A Hip Hopera. The film starred Beyonce, Mikhei Phifer, and my forever MCM Mos Def. I think this was perhaps the first time I had seen him, I know I had heard his music at friends’ houses. I was reminded of this as I took a little self-care afternoon the other day and my man Mos Def came on with this banger on my playlist. So let’s take it baccccccccckkkkkkkk:
