#TMITuesday: 10 Questions With Yo Fam! Star And Director Alexandria Benoit

I don’t think I could even imagine being a teenager now, I mean I’ve pretended to be one for film and TV but everything is f*cked now. Canadian director and actress Alexandria Benoit has helped to create a look into a subculture for youth that doesn’t have nearly as much exposure as it deserves. A look into the world of skating and hip hop is what we’re going to get with Yo Fam! and I had the opportunity to talk to Benoit all about it. We also chat about my new starring role on the show (please inhale that sarcasm y’all), and Krabby Patties? All in this fresh #TMITuesday interview!

1. Who is your Director idol?

My Mom hands down. She’s such an inspiring person to be around. I love her vision and how she knows exactly how to execute it. She has such a deep understanding of storytelling and how it impacts a universal human truth that seems to touch everyone she connects with her filmmaking. She also has a tremendous leadership talent and is able to communicate to all of her departments and inspire them to be the best that they can be in delivering their talents to the vision of a film.
I also am very intrigued by the work of Del Toro, Wes Anderson, Alejandro Gonzàlez Iñàrritu, Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick.

2. Since today is #TMITuesday can you tell me something about yourself that I may be surprised to know? Any hidden talents or guilty pleasures?

I’m quite impulsive and secretive- I take pleasure in doing things and then seeing if my family notices. I dyed my hair blonde recently and didn’t say one word and waited for them to ask me about it. Subsequently, I turned it blue and I heard a voice from upstairs call out “ALEXX did you dye your hair AGAIN?” I think its really funny, I’m sure they are not as amused as I am.

A guilty pleasure would have to be Pretty Little Liars. One day I got so invested I didn’t know how to stop and I learned a very important thing about patience. I’m also a sucker for a boy in a baseball tee.

3. So tell me more about Yo Fam!, what can viewers expect from the series?

Yo Fam! Is such a fun project to be apart of! It really speaks to a younger audience and has all of the elements that were quite influential to me growing up around skateboarding and hip-hop. Many of the scenarios written into the show are based on my own experiences, or my co-creator’s Matthew Almeida’s blended with other things we’ve witnessed. We took those ideas added a twist and made it fun!  YO FAM!

You can expect lots of drama between COOPER and KING throughout the show while LEEJAY often trying to be the level-headed one in the group. Hank is hilarious and his mysterious past from India soon catches up with him. The Hood Princess also helps the boys when they get on a famous Directors radar.

4. What would you say is your ‘theme song’ to your life?

I don’t think there’s one universal tune because I’m forever changing and love so many different styles of music though if I could I’d have Brendon Urie follow me around while singing. He has the voice of an angel.
5. The Yo Fam! cast is stacked with Canadian talent, including Richard Walters of Degrassi: Next Class (all that it’s missing is Nikki Sin AMIRITE Y’ALL?!). Which Canadian actor/actress would you like to make a cameo on the show?

Haha, Nikki, we’d love to have you! You can come join Hood Princess’ skate gang The Alley Cats.  Two Canadian actors who I’d love to make an appearance would have to be Seth Rogan and Jay Baruchel, they’d be hilariously interacting with COOP and LEEJAY. I think they would give them some really good advice too.

6. I adore seeing women in positions such as yours with directing and acting. Do you have any advice for young women looking to get into the business?

Start writing! That’s the beginning! Find inspiration. Write what you know. Make fun projects, silly things. AlexYOFam2

Learn to edit. Learn all fields of filmmaking because it will make you a stronger filmmaker by understanding each department. See what works and what doesn’t.

Create things with whats available to you. If all you have is your bedroom and a cat, that’s a scene right there!

7. Let’s get to the bottom of this: is ketchup a sauce?

Let’s get to the bottom of this: finding out the secret formula to the Krabby Patty.

8. If I could play ANY character it would be Buffy Summers, what is your dream role?

*Cries in Spanish* BUFFY is everyone’s dream role but no one should touch the iconic portrayal of Miss Buffy Summers by SMG- Like they say- if it is not broke, don’t fix it! I’m down for a Slayer reboot maybe starring a new potential with appearances by the Queen herself. I can Buffy talk all day long but a dream role for me would be to play Tally Youngblood from the Sci-Fi series Uglies written by Scott Westerfield – Or Alaska Young from Looking for Alaska by John Green.
I’d also love to play Angelina Jolie’s daughter, just saying. HIIII ANGIE!!
9.  Whom do you relate the most to on Yo Fam!?

All of the characters are apart of me in a way.  I feel like I gave each one a droplet of my personality, or of others I had been influenced by. Hank’s happy go lucky attitude comes from working at a t-shirt store whose owner had such a personality amongst many other adventures I’ve had along the way.

10. What’s next for you Alexandria?

I’m excited to continue to work on this project while I have a few others in development. In between Ballet and Acting classes I find a lot of peace in poetry, I’m interested in sharing it in a unique way.  As for everything else? I guess you’ll have to stay tuned…

I certainly plan to stay tuned to what this up and coming talent has to offer. You can also stay tuned to thenikkisin.com every week for new posts, and follow my Instagram for updates!
