#ThrowbackThursday: 10 Questions with actor/singer Matthew Edwards

Its not often you find such a kind and charismatic triple threat like Matt Edwards, an actor/singer/dancer from Mississauga, Ontario. Most recently appearing in Shawn Mendes’ new music video for “Something Big” this 2013 interview is my #throwbackThursday interview!

1. How do you find the acting scene in Toronto, in comparison to the United States?

I feel like the acting scene down here is very supportive, where The united States is more competitive just because acting is so broad down there. It’s hard here because The states is provided with tons opportunities for acting. Canada is definitely getting tons more opportunities thankfully, but the scene in Canada is just much smaller than the united states, sometimes making it more of a challenge here.
2. You seem to be quite the gym rat, how important is fitness for you as an actor?

Fitness to me is really important, just because personally, I want to live a long life. To me, it makes me want to be active and be physical and give me motivation. I also know that down the road, being active and being physically fit will help me get more roles and help with the active lifestyle that I want for myself.
3. You post daily selfies of you #OOTD (outfit of the day), so you’re clearly into fashion. Whats your favourite look for fall?

Umm, my favourite look for Fall this year is definitely light wash jeans. I’m really into them. I wear sweaters religiously in the fall and I’m in love with Flannels too, so definitely Flannels. I feel like Tims are good to have as well, right before Winter, so I’m excited to bring those out.
4. Social media plays a big part in your life it seems, and you have quite the following on various sites. So what hashtag do you think would best describe you?

That’s a really good question, I have no idea really. I know I use the hashtag #dope or #dopest a lot on Instagram, so most likely that. Also #Foodporn or #Toronto, #Rihanna, or something to do with #keek. Most likely those.
5. You often release cover videos (most recently of Drake’s new track “Hold on we’re going home”), does music help inspire your passion for acting?

No, I’d say it doesn’t actually. Music is more of a personal thing for me. Something I can I relate a feeling or a time in my life too. As where acting is more me not being myself and me being someone else or being a character and pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone to be something different. You can always kind of relate to a character your playing through an event you went through or at least can try too, but music is more personal, it’s more feelings and bringing back memories or creating memories. Especially growing up, music like Michael Jackson’s or Whitney Houston’s, old hip hop, old r&b, or old inspire me with memories or feelings. Even songs now. For as long as I can remember, singing has been something I enjoy, like a pass time to me. Where acting is something I want to do and only do for the rest of my life.
6. Again, you have a lot of followers on your multiple social media accounts, so its clear you have a great online support system, does this reign true in your real life? (Whats your friend and family support system like)

Oh ya, definitely! My friends and family are mad supportive and I couldn’t be anymore happy and blessed with them. As cliché as it sounds, no matter what I know they all have my back. Literally, they’re on my back. I have a tattoo that says “God, Family Friends.” That helps me know they’re there with me, even when they can’t physically be there. Whether it’s texting me to see if I’m ok, or encouraging me, or promoting things I do, they always rooting me on. So I’m so thankful for all of them.

7. With this being #TMI Thursday, tell the wax museum readers something they wouldn’t know about you from your roles, and social media vlogging.

It’s funny because I do share a lot on social media, but I try to keep something’s private and personal, just so I retain that for the future, but things people won’t know about me is that I don’t like dressing up. If it’s for a wedding or an event where I have to wear a suit and tie, I’m not happy. When I post #OOTD post, I’m happy. I’m comfortable. Those things I like to wear. Suits? No. And Second, I don’t like clowns or raccoons. They creep me out and scare me. Don’t like them. And third, I don’t like wearing socks. As little as that is, I hate wearing them. I know they’re socially expected, so I wear them, but if I get to wear shoes I don’t have to wear socks with, I’m the happiest person out there.

8. I have to ask, whats your favourite film/TV show and why?

It’s probably easier to say my favourite tv show first. Definitely, The Fresh Prince of Bel-air. That show shaped my childhood and youth. Love that show. And I’m really into Breaking Bad too. I’m not caught up on that show, but the camera angles they use and the shots, the scenery, the characters, plot and dialog is amazing. That show deserves a lot more credit than it’s given. And as far as film? The Top 3 that I can think of right now would be The Lion King, Independence Day and Transformers.
9. Aside from music, who and what inspire you?

I would say my friends for sure. Just the drive and the motivation a lot of them have is really inspirational and something to look up too. Two of my best friends go to school for Football. The drive they have to be where they want to be and know what they have to do in order to get there and be successful inspires me a lot. I look up to that.
10. Whats next for you?

Acting wise, my agency and I are working on something. I can’t say too much about it though. Hopefully I can say something about it soon. I really want to get into the studio again. The feedback from my last cover video has been amazing, so I want to get back into the studio and hit everyone with something different. Other than that, Thanksgiving is coming up, so I’m super excited for that. Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday, so I’m excited to see all my friends and family during that time. On the side, I really want to get into #DIY projects. Maybe find some sweaters and put really cool print of graphics on them. I think those are really dope. So what’s next? Mainly stay super busy.
