My Top 6 Favourite Podcasts of 2016

Fun fact: A few years ago a good friend of mine, and radio (student at the time, now a real life radio host) Steve and I recorded a few podcasts.

Perhaps it is because I’m getting older but recently talk radio hasn’t been boring to me? The solution to avoiding the radio and its non-stop commercials is podcasts. I’m aware podcasts are not a new thing but I only got into them in 2015/2016, and as you can tell from #worfWednesday I do what I want on this site. Based on my entertainment interests (excluding anything political, or educational because come on now this is a pop culture blog…) here are my top 6 favourites of the year.

6. The Bright Sessionsgenre: Sci-fi

This fictional podcast is like a set of bonfire/bedtime stories, each episode is sort of like an audio book that is labeled as “an audio drama”.

“Listen in on the recordings of Dr. Bright, a therapist who provides mental health services for the “strange and unusual”. But does she have a hidden agenda pushing her to assemble a gang of super-powered patients? Duh.”

5.  Extra Hot Great by Previously TVgenre: TV/pop culture

Okay so this long-running podcast may have ended but there are 200+ episodes/minis available on iTunes that sure got me through 2016. It’s quite easy to feel comfortable quickly while listening to this hit.

4. Nerdistgenre: Nerdy sh*t

“I am Chris Hardwick. I am on TV a lot and have a blog at nerdist.com. This podcast is basically just me talking about stuff and things with my two nerdy friends Jonah Ray and Matt Mira, and usually someone more famous than all of us. Occasionally we swear because that is fun. I hope you like it, but if you don’t I’m sure you will not hesitate to unfurl your rage in the ‘reviews’ section because that’s how the Internet works.”

3. Fatman On Batmangenre: pop culture/comics/geek culture

Kevin Smith talking about geek culture? Yes please. With superheroes being big again in film/TV I’m getting pretty sick of having to hear about anything comic book related from some douche on Entertainment Tonight. Smith is a actor/write/director himself, and of course a huge comic fan (he named his daughter Harley Quinn #fanboy). Also note: Smith has a plethora of other podcasts so I would also recommend Talk Salad and Scrambled Eggs: Frasier Reconsidered.

2. Extra Hot Great by Previously TVgenre: TV/pop culture

Okay so this long-running podcast may have ended but there are 200+ episodes/minis available on iTunes that sure got me through 2016. It’s quite easy to feel comfortable quickly while listening to this hit.

1. Doin’ It Raw genre: music/pop culture/whatever they want

Tyler Posey and Tyler Schnabel talk about life, music, pop culture, and remain the little pop punk princes that they were meant to be. Posey, and Schnabel steer away from visual expression, and chat about various topics. What I like most about this podcast, and why it hit #1 is as the title states: RAW (shimmy shimmy yah). It’s like hanging out with friends when you listen; you get a sense of familiarity, a solid flow of conversation, occasional cheers from Posey complete with beer drinking, fart jokes, and music.
