In this week’s interview I continue my vow to bring back the written interview article with a true rebel. In these 10 questions readers get to know Australian Survivor’s Raymond Chaney, whether or not he lives in squalor, his fave films and music, his relationships status, and we may or may not become long distance best friends.

Give it a read now while I wait for some tim tams in the mail.

1. As a fellow pop-culture aficionado, what would you say is your fave medium of media to consume? Are you more of a music buff or a movie person? TV or videogames? Comic books?

I’m definitely more of a Music Buff but I do go to the cinema often. I’ve even driven all the way from The Central Coast to Canberra to watch a film before at the NFSA. Quite often you can catch me going to the free movies that are playing in Sydney at the Art Gallery Of NSW. I saw Eraserhead like a week or 2 ago down there so if you see me around feel free to say hi. But regarding music, I am a big fan of genre defining albums and the songs which are viewed as the origins of their genres. Much like how the term “Jangle Pop” stems from the lyrics in the Byrds version of Mr Tambourine Man or how people think that the 1st Dream-Pop song is Sunday Morning from The Velvet Underground and Nico. Bullshit titbits like that fascinate me, but yeah, I mostly listen to Baroque Pop albums between 1965-1970.

Here are my top 10 songs:

1. Here Come The Fleas – White Noise

2. Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys

3. This Charming Man – The Smith’s

4. Eccojam A2 – Chuck Person

5. I am the Walrus – The Beatles

6. The Garden of Earthly Delights – The United States of America

7. My World Fell Down – Sagittarius

8. Going Back – The Byrds

9. Peacebone – Animal Collective

10. Hair – The Cowsills

Top 10 Movies:

1. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Shame it won all those Oscars. I felt a bit less alternate when that happened but it is such a brilliant film).

2. Center Jenny (The 2013 film)

3. Funeral Parade of Roses

4. Speed Racer (The Wachowskis film)

5. 2001 A Space Odyssey

6. Inception

7. Lupin the 3rd Castle of Cagliostro

8. Being John Malkovich

9. The Thing (The 1982 film)

10. Persona (The 1966 film)

I’m seeing Clockwork Orange for the 1st time tonight and that will probably wind up being on this list.

2. What would you say is your ‘theme song’ and why?

My theme song is definitely Here Come The Fleas off the 1968 Album An Electric Storm by White Noise. That song sounds like my head 24/7. I still can’t believe how much they were able to fit into 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

I forced everyone on Survivor to listen to that song and they all hated it.

3. Following your Academy award-winning performance (IYKYK), can fans expect to see you light up the big screen?

Pfft. I’m actually thinking of going to Broken Hill sometime to see The Big Ant as a joke and there always randomly seems to be something getting filmed there so I guess I could try to sneak into the background of a shot.

4. Since today is #TMITuesday can you tell me something that the readers may not already know about you? (hidden talents or skills, etc)

I have seen the Stanley Kubrick film 2001 a Space Odyssey over 15 times in Cinema. Thanks Nolan for redistributing the film in its original 70mm glory back in 2018 to celebrate its in 50th anniversary.

5. I am not ashamed to admit that I spend a lot of time on Reddit and X (formally Twitter), and you have quite the array of fans, so here’s a question from a lot of the ladies. Are you single?

Yeah. But I am also laughably one of those males which has no bed frame and I know that was an ongoing joke with women recently and how none of them are willing to stoop that low regarding standards. In my defence, it is mainly so I can project movies on my ceiling to simulate a sort of cinema environment, but an answer like that could also be me finding a way to cope. Also, I have absolutely no aspirations to stop living my squaller, lower class lifestyle seeing as its fun cosplaying like I live in some sort of 90’s, Sharehouse-type movie akin to “He Died With A Felafel In His Hand”. Honestly, no partner of mine deserves to be forced to live life that way.

Also if you have a partner it is harder to do sporadic things like just up and go on a dumb Reality TV show at 2 weeks notice.

6. Let’s do a little this or that:

-Tim Tams or Pengiun biscuits?

What is a penguin biscuit?

– boardgames or videogames?

Videogames, specifically the Playstation 2 Game God Hand

-Streaming or DVDs/VHS?

Blu-Rays look great on my projector but I am also an avid user of Fmoviesz.to if that illegal movie website counts as streaming lol.

-Cold weather or hot weather?

Cold weather. Easier to rug up than take off.

– cooking or takeout/ordering in?

Depends if money is a factor.

-cats or dogs?

Cats make so much less noise. But just like having a partner, having a pet means you can’t just up and go sporadically on a Reality TV show or drive to Western Australia whenever you want because you have the responsibility of looking after a little furball. I live with a cat currently but it isn’t mine. Love that little guy.

7. Very often in an interview I hear/read the question: ‘what is the most challenging thing you have ever faced in your life?’, I,however, tend to take things a little less seriously in life. So what is the least challenging thing you have ever faced in your life?

This, non podcast interview.

( is this the moment Raymond realized he wanted to watch films with me as we lay in squalor together? maybe. )

8. Would you consider competing or appearing on another reality show?

I am such a fan of Survivor because its just so much fun to watch mostly privileged people who don’t have the hindsight to consider that there are disadvantages that come with having you at your absolute worst, due to hunger and tiredness, be showcased to the world. What a strange mental experiment. I’d do any Reality TV show where I can just laugh at those sorts of mentally exhausted idiots again.

9. Can you describe an average day in your life for the readers?

Most days are different but most contain me OP shopping for old Moog Synthesizer records and dogshit ironic t-shirts about drinking beer.

10. What’s next for you Raymond?

Idk. Probably stuck having to work in customer service again and put up with people again
